Harrogate's popular and sociable chamber choir, is a mixed-voice choir of experienced and enthusiastic singers, singing a wide variety of music, both sacred and secular, from the fifteenth century to the present day. The choir sings four concerts a year of which at least one is dedicated to raising funds for local charities, including Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Martin House Children's Hospice and the Harrogate Homeless Project. It performs concerts in a wide range of settings and is equally at home performing at weddings and other events as requested.
The Choir was formed in 1974 under the name of Harrogate Chamber Singers and gained a reputation for choral excellence under the directorship of Dr Clive McLelland, who is now Associate Professor of Music in the School of Music, Leeds University. In January 2012, Vocalis appointed Edmund Aldhouse, then Assistant Musical Director at Ripon Cathedral as its Musical Director. Edmund conducted Vocalis in several acclaimed performances, including a popular 'Come and Sing' Olivet to Calvary, before he took up post as Assistant Organist at Ely Cathedral in September 2013. The current Musical Director is talented young conductor Alexander Kyle and the choir is going from strength to strength under his direction.
Vocalis regularly collaborates with other groups, including English Touring Opera and the Harrogate Philharmonic Orchestra. In Spring 2016, they worked with a small professional band and soprano soloist Peyee Chen to perform a programme of Haydn and Handel.
Alex Kyle, read music at the University of Huddersfield, where he studied conducting under Natalia Luis-Bassa and singing with Andrew Slater. A life-long choral singer, Alex began conducting choirs in 2010 and became the Huddersfield Choral Society's Choral Conducting Scholar in 2011. He joined the Diocese of Leeds Music Programme in 2012 as Conducting Scholar and is now the Diocese's Choral Director for Bradford, with responsibility for the Bradford Catholic Boys Choir and the Bradford Catholic Junior Choir. Alex also works in the Harrogate area with the recently formed Halcyon Youth Choir.
